Reading Slump Recovery: Why I Stopped Reading English Romance and How I’m Coming Back

I have a secret: I have been absolutely slacking off on my website for a long time. It’s because of a lot of different things. Now, I’m trying to fix it with my reading slump recovery plan.

The worst reading slump of my life

Everyone has a really bad reading slump once in a while, but mine was so bad that it made me switch to a whole different language 😅.

I got so stuck reading English romance books that, for the first time in my life, I read language romance books. And I am still there 3, 4 years later.

I’ve done a lot of reflections since then, and I attribute two main reasons for it: Getting into incomplete series, and relying too much on Kindle Unlimited.

The Danger of Starting An Incomplete Series

I can’t speak for everyone, but I’ve noticed a pattern. No matter how much I like a series, I tend to lose the urge to complete it if the unreleased books come out too long afterwards. Some books I ended up not finishing, even when I really liked them, because they weren’t completed.

Some Examples include:

Curse of the Gods by Jaymin Eve and Jane Washington – Missing Book 5 Pain Pain by Jane Washington

WITSEC by Ashley N. Rostek – Literally only read book one. Loved it but completely forgot the series after waiting for the rest of the books to release…

I do not know why that’s the case. I really think life gets carried away, so if it takes too long, I struggle to get back into it. But one thing I’m really working towards this year is reviving my love for English romance books, so I’m going to start by finishing these ones and working on my website harder!

Only Reading Kindle Unlimited Series

Aside from Spotify, Kindle Unlimited comes in second as the subscription I’ve continuously used for a period. Especially for an avid romance reader like me, the convenience was genuinely addicting. But that also made me overly dependent on it.

The Introduction Of Otome Games In My Life

So it did originally start with Japanese Switch console games for me, however that introduced me to the world of gacha otome games, and then there was no return for me.

What I really appreciate about Love and Deepspace for example is the sense of companionship it has given me. I really do feel like I’m with the guys, and the sense of immersion is immaculate. I just wish they update the main story more often :(.

My Reading Slump Recover Plan

So, where does that leave me now? After years of immersive otome games and easy-access Kindle reads, I realized I wasn’t just in a slump; I had stopped trying with English books. I got too comfortable with the instant gratification of KU and let unfinished series slip through the cracks.

But this year, I’m making a conscious change. I’m calling it my “Romance Revival.”

First, I’m tackling my “TBR graveyard.” I’m finally going back to finish Pain by Jane Washington and re-reading the WITSEC series from the start to give it the proper attention it deserves. I’ve realized that the fear of forgetting the plot is what stops me, so instead of waiting for all the books to come out, I’m going to start them when the final book has a concrete release date.

Second, I’m stepping outside the Kindle Unlimited bubble. I miss the thrill of buying a physical book I’m genuinely excited about, or scouring the library for a hidden gem. I want to fall in love with the prose again, not just the plot points.

Ultimately, I miss the feeling of getting lost in a story that doesn’t require a “battle pass” or a daily login. I miss the satisfaction of turning the last page of a finished series. It’s going to take some work to rebuild that reading stamina, but I think my journey through gaming and foreign languages has actually made me appreciate English storytelling in a new way.

Here’s to getting back to my roots, one page at a time. I’ll be documenting my progress here, so if you’re also trying to crawl out of a reading slump, let’s do it together.
