my review
I received a free copy for an honest review.
I believe audiobooks can really distinguish a book’s level of able-to-put-down-ness.
Because it is so much easier to doze off and miss things in audiobooks (consciously or unconsciously), this would be the perfect testing ground to see truly how much the reader is invested in the book. For example, when I listened to Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo’s audiobook, I remember everything and missed nothing, and I can still clearly remember how much I want to continue.
That did not happen with this book.
The book seemed very promising in the beginning. The heroine’s narration was a very fun read with some truly amazing action sequences, and the world building really convinced me for a while this book would be my indie-hit. But I soon realized how much trouble I was in when the main male character first met our heroine, and it was an instant attraction/pairing up.
(Yeah. Oh hell no.)
But it’s okay, the book is still savable if the romance takes a more angsty turn and become better developed with a less instantly-becoming-a-couple chemistry/romance. But that did not happen.
It’s so sad because this book had so much potential for me to love, from the action to the characters and narration. But from the instant-love mixed with the okay-storyline that is so common in indie-style books, this book just wasn’t good enough for me to be able to continue. And at this point in my life as a reader, I have so many books that I want to read (with so little time), I learned to recognize red-flag signs to single out books like this so I can save my time by passing it up.
But as much as I didn’t enjoy this book as I hoped, I really don’t want to just flat-out trash it, because this book is definitely not trash. Its just…there is nothing about it for me to truly care enough to continue. With such an average and common indie-storyline, the one saving grace this book could’ve easily had is to have a really, really good angsty romance (look at Jennifer L. Armentrout. Her paranormal book story-lines are not original at all, but her books compensate that perfectly by having a fantastically ship-able couples).
I think I’ll recommend this book…to anyone really (unless you like instant-love mixed with that forbidden factor). I don’t even know how to recommend it, or why I should even recommend it. Because this book did not give a reason to urge people to spend their time on it, nor did it provide me with an experience for me to enjoy enough to try to share it with everyone.
Overall, this book is not crap, but I think the best way to describe my problem with it is that there is not a strong enough reason in this book for me to believe that my time should be used up continuing this storyline. It’s a shame, but as readers, it’s evitable that we stumble upon disappointing readers every few books.
