Captive of the Horde King by Zoey Draven

Captive of the Horde King
Series: Horde Kings of Dakkar #1

She made a deal with the Dakkari devil. Now, he owns her.

On the unforgiving planet of Dakkar, I did what all the humans in our village did: kept my head down, worked to provide for my family, and I certainly didn’t break any Dakkari laws to risk inciting the alien race’s merciless wrath.

Unfortunately, the same couldn’t be said for my brother and one careless mistake brings a horde of the nomadic, barbarian Dakkari straight to our doorstep, led by their powerful horde king—a cold, ruthless, battle-scarred warrior demanding retribution.

In order to save my brother’s life, I do the unthinkable.

I sell myself to the horde king as his war prize. I agree to warm his furs, to travel with his horde across the wild lands of Dakkar, and to never see my family again.

But as I struggle with my new reality, I discover that the surly, mysterious, dominant horde king never intended for me to be his concubine…

He wants me as his queen.

Now this book definitely is on the light end of the heater/smut meter, but the premise and romance are so good it makes up for it! If you are excited about some tail action (I hope my mom never sees this), sci-fi alien muscle rulers, and more, you would definitely want to read this book! And it’s especially recommended if you are already a fan of Ruby Dixon’s alien books.

Choosing Theo by Victoria Aveline

Series: The Clecanian Series #1
Being kidnapped by aliens is only the start of Jade’s problems. Thankfully, her rescuers, an alien race known as the Clecanians, are willing to protect her, but she has to stay on their planet for one year and respect the rules of their culture—including choosing a husband. Jade refuses at first but decides to play along until she can find a way back to Earth.

Theo, a scarred mercenary who prefers a life of solitude, is stunned when Jade selects him as her husband. After years of being passed over, he never imagined he would be chosen and neither did anyone else. Only one explanation makes sense…the curvy enticing female must be a spy, and Theo’s determined to break her cover using any means necessary.

As Jade and Theo are forced to spend time together, their chemistry becomes undeniable. But neither can afford to bring love into the equation, especially since Jade seems determined to go home. After all, she can’t possibly stay here, right?

Alien kidnapping to a matriarchal alien society. Man is a guy who nobody wants (the book will explain why). This trope was new to me but I unexpectedly enjoyed it a lot!

Homebound by Lydia Hope

Series: Rix Universe #1
Genre: Science Fiction, Aliens, Romance, Fantasy, Dystopia, Paranormal, Adult, Futuristic, Dark
Earth is in decline, and the wealthy have fled it leaving only the destitute citizens behind. And aliens. Gemma McKinley works at a prison cleaning goop off the floors and serving food to inmates. When she is reassigned to the alien ward, Gemma is nervous. Aliens are dangerous and ruthless. They bite. But there is one that isn’t like them. Simon is damaged, starved, and wasting away in complete isolation.

Touched by his loneliness, Gemma starts nursing him back to health, dismissing rumors that he’s high-risk, ignoring the advice to let him croak. Simon despises humans. His only goal is to get off this miserable planet fast, for he is hunted by a scientist obsessed with perfecting the human race. Simon’s rare alien genes are just the ingredient that’s missing for breakthrough research. Thanks to Gemma, for the first time in years he can escape. And he will. He will… As the hunt for Simon heats up, Gemma becomes an unintended target. Is she a fool to help him get away? And will he risk another captivity to protect her?

Homebound takes place on a futuristic dystopian Earth after aliens have discovered it. The writing is phenomenal in this book but be warned! The ending was kin of abrupt and it could’ve really used an epilogue. Personally still worth a read since it’s free on KU but this warning is warranted.

Beyond the Next Star by Melody Johnson

Series: Love Beyond #1
Genre: Science Fiction, Aliens, Romance, Fantasy, Paranormal, Adult, Space
An intolerable order. A desperate charade. A deadly secret.

Before Commander Torek Renaar can return to active duty, he’s ordered to purchase an animal companion to help relieve his PTSD symptoms. But having been a caretaker for and lost a loved one, keeping even one little human alive is a challenge he feels doomed to fail. It doesn’t help that his animal companion is the newest, most exotic breed on the market, demanding constant attention, daily grooming, and delicate handling. If she doesn’t die first in his incompetent care, she’ll be the death of him.

After witnessing the murder of her domestication specialist, Delaney McCormick allows her new owner to treat her like the pet he believes her to be. If anyone suspects she’s more intelligent than a golden retriever, her murder would be next. She endures the humiliation of being washed, the tediousness of being trained to “sit” and “come,” and the intrigue of hearing private conversations. But in Torek’s care, she finds something unexpected on this antarctic planet, something she never had in all her years on Earth while house-hopping between foster families: a home.

As companionship grows to love, must Delaney continue the charade, acting like an animal and hiding from the murderer waiting on her misstep? Or can she trust Torek with her secrets, even if the truth threatens everything he holds dear—and both their lives?

Like Ice Planet Barbarians, the FMC in this book is also abducted from Earth and is sold off to a planet where humans are “pets”. She has to pretend to be a pte to stay alive and is bought by her owner (the male lead). The male lead who is the epitome of a “damaged hero” doesn’t really treat her like a pet, and their relationship grows to become a healing romance. As they get closer they both help each other heal in their own ways.

The Last Hour of Gann by R. Lee Smith

Genre: Science Fiction, Aliens, Romance, Fantasy, Paranormal, Adult, Dark, Horror

This book has the forced proximity trope where they heal together in a cave. This alien romance takes its time writing out the process of taking the time to actually learn each other’s languages instead of just magically being able to communicate through magic or technology. Instead of being really spicy, this book would be more mature because of the graphic violence. There is also a huge philosophical theme aside from the romance regarding the idea of god, man’s relationship with nature cough climate change cough, divine will, and more. Honestly got a LOT more than I expected for an alien romance (in a good way, of course, it was a pleasant surprise).

Strange Love by Ann Aguirre

Series: Galactic Love #1
Genre: Romance, Science Fiction, Aliens, Fantasy, Adult, Fiction, Paranormal
He’s awkward. He’s adorable. He’s alien as hell.
Zylar of Kith Balak is a four-time loser in the annual Choosing. If he fails to find a nest guardian this time, he’ll lose his chance to have a mate for all time. Desperation drives him to try a matching service but due to a freak solar flare and a severely malfunctioning ship AI, things go way off course. This ‘human being’ is not the Tiralan match he was looking for.

She’s frazzled. She’s fierce. She’s from St. Louis.
Beryl Bowman’s mother always said she’d never get married. She should have added a rider about the husband being human. Who would have ever thought that working at the Sunshine Angel daycare center would offer such interstellar prestige? She doesn’t know what the hell’s going on, but a new life awaits on Barath Colony, where she can have any alien bachelor she wants.

They agree to join the Choosing together, but love is about to get seriously strange.

A great alien romance book because of how well the romance transcends the normal binary barriers that come between different species (I’m describing this like alien romance is actually possible). Because the male lead is an alien, a lot of behaviour reminds me of a himbo and honestly that made him really cute and the interactions between him and the female lead were very sweet to read. Also has alien smut reminiscent of Ice Planet Barbarians!

As many readers may know (especially romance book readers), oftentimes we like to seek out book tropes and read romance books that include the book tropes we usually like and the book tropes we want to read at the moment. It’s what drives a lot of book recommendations and is a common way we seek out books to read.

If you are a reader who is interested in:

  • Tracking tropes that you have already read
  • Tracking tropes that you would want to read in the future
  • Collect original trope ideas that you came up with (and haven’t come across before)

Then this book trope reading journal is perfectly made for you!
